Global support for Earth Hour City Challenge

The Earth Hour City Challenge initiative has been created to celebrate cities that are taking amazing steps forward in creating a greener, cleaner and more sustainable city to live and inspiring other cities to do the same.

A number of supporters are contributing to the challenge on various levels. ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability is a main partner of the Earth Hour City Challenge, supporting outreach through its network of over 1220 local governments in 72 countries, representing more than 10% of the world´s population. ICLEI will provide technical support for cities to register data on the digital platform cCCR, an internationally recognized carbon reporting platform for local authorities.

ICLEI, Accenture, the Carbon Disclosure Projects (CDP) and the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group in partnership with the Clinton Climate Initiative (C40-CCI) are providing expertise to develop the evaluation criteria and processes to select national finalists and the overall global Earth Hour Capital.

The challenge will include review of an international panel of judges. This panel currently includes ICLEI and the CDP. This international phase of the Earth Hour City Challenge is supported by the assistance of the Swedish Postcode Lottery, a charity lottery with the purpose to raise money for charities. The Lottery supports organizations who work for a better world.
