Earth Hour, Nepal, saw the active participation of youth and representatives from the government, diplomatic missions, conservation partners, and civil society. An Earth Prayer was recited in the famous Lumbini Core Garden by monks representing five different nations; a dedication to the one thing that binds us all – our planet.

As the lights of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House switched off for Earth Hour 2011, the city where Earth Hour began back in 2007 played host to the inaugural Earth Hour Awards.

As the Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest switched off its lights for Earth Hour 2011 in March, Romanian’s took to the streets of their capital with peddle power, reclaiming the roads for the people in an Earth Hour bike ride that was hailed “a victory of the bike over the car”.

Reaching 1.8 billion people across 135 nations, Earth Hour 2011 was a clear indication of the world’s growing desire to seek solutions to the planet’s environmental challenges, the most pressing of course being the issue of climate change. But how are the people of the world being represented by their government officials at the COP17 climate talks currently taking place in Durban, South Africa?
