RIO+20: WHAT KIND OF FUTURE DO YOU WANT?

We’re now in the two-week countdown to Rio+20, the UN’s conference on sustainable development in Brazil.

It’s 20 years since the landmark 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, the first time world leaders came together to debate the issues of development and the environment on the same platform.

What’s not up for debate is the urgency for action.

WWF’s Living Planet Report states the world is currently using 1.5 planet’s worth of resources to support life on Earth. If we continue to use resources at this rate, by 2030 even two planet Earths will not be enough to sustain us.

But we only have one.

So what can YOU do to make your voice heard at Rio+20?

You can start with WWF’s Earth Book, your chance to say what you love most about the natural world – and what you couldn’t bear to lose. Over the coming weeks the Earth Book will be filled with stories about the amazing experiences and connections people have with the natural world. Add your story here

Show world leaders at Rio+20 what kind of sustainable lifestyle you want for the future, by uploading your own pics at the UN’s “Pictures of the world” website

Help the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) tell the UN what we want for the future of our planet, by joining their environmental action parade, without leaving your living room! You can add your “steps” to the march by going here

Keep yourself posted on news out of the summit as it happens, by following @UN_Rioplus20 on Twitter, or Liking them on Facebook

Don’t forget to look out for Greenpeace’s Kumi Naidoo who’ll be turning his beard green during Rio+20, as part of his I Will If You Will challenge for Earth Hour this year. We’ll be posting video of him greened up so you can see him in action!

And of course, join Earth Hour in sharing the planet love every day on Twitter @earthhour and on Facebook!

We’ll remind you of the amazing world we live in, and why we should do whatever we can to protect it.
