In January, Sands Cotai Central’s Conrad Macao hotel kicked off its Green Resolution 2013 by turning off its exterior facade lights and non-essential indoor lighting, as a symbolic and practical extension of its participation in Earth Hour Every Month.

Now as part of their own I Will If You Will dare, they have challenged other hotels and resorts Macao, promising to increase its “switch off” efforts to twice a month if 10 other Macao hotels agree to turn off their lights once every month.

The Venetian Macao, which houses the world’s largest casino, has accepted this challenge to go beyond the hour and turned its lights off on February 7, marking the first of many monthly Earth Hours.

Inspiring other hotels to join in, and the Conrad Macao are now closer to their goal with four more Sands hotels (Four Seasons, Sheraton Macao, Holiday Inn Macao and Sands Macao) participating in their Green Resolution. On the first Tuesday of every month, these hotels will come together and “switch off” in order to conserve energy and raise awareness for environmental sustainability in Macao.

The Conrad Macao’s green initiative has created waves around the world, even reaching the shores of South Africa, where Cape Grace and the Bascule Bar at Cape Grace have committed to Earth Hour every month! Hilton Worldwide has also commended Conrad Macao’s extension of Earth Hour on Twitter.

Other hotels are getting into the Earth Hour spirit with their own light out action on March 23, 2013. The Hilton Strathclyde in Scotland and the Royal Plaza on Scotts in Singapore will be switching off or unessential lighting. While in New Zealand, Heritage Hotels are planning Earth Hour candle lit dinners for guests.
