EARTH HOUR ANDY: ASIA-POP AND BOLLYWOOD CELEBS ENGAGE FANS TO GO BEYOND THE HOUR
Today we wanted to share with you the massive growth in the movement across Asia. Earth Hour has never been heavily dependent on celebrity, relying instead on grassroots activity, but there is no denying that support from main stream personalities lifts the campaign to new levels. If you are into your Asia-Pop, Bollywood, and popular culture you should be blown away by the following list of talent committing to do I Will if You Will challenges and engaging their fan bases in going beyond the hour this year:
Nadya Hutagalung, Utt Panichkul, Pevita Pearce, Andy F. Noya, Ariel from NOAH, G.E.M. (鄧紫棋), Eason Chan (陳奕迅), Kay Tse (謝安琪), Shruti Hassan, Marc Nelson, Rovilson Fernandez, Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski, Bathiya & Santhush (BNS), Li Bingbing (李冰冰), Yu Quan (羽泉), Chen Yibing (陈一冰), Li Yundi (李云迪), Li Yuchun (李宇春), Harlem Yu (庾澄慶), Sonia Sui (隋棠), JJ Lin (林俊傑), Amber Kuo (郭采潔) , Christine Fan (范瑋琪) and S.H.E These Ambassadors represent China, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, India and Sri Lanka and have a total social fan base in the 100s of millions. (below Selina from Taiwan pop group S.H.E.)
The support for the campaign across the region reflects the rise of a growing Asia, both as an economic powerhouse and as an influential hub for global initiatives such as Earth Hour - the celebrities represent a total population of more than 4 billion people, so their influence and engagement drives participation to an often young, vibrant motivated group of participants.
WWF Singapore's Ambassador and host of Asia Pacific's number 1 ranked cable show, Asia's Next Top Model Nadya Hutagalung said, “The issues that face our planet are as relevant to Asia as they are to the rest of the world. As our economies grow and Asia becomes the predominant economic force across the planet, we have to pause and think about what legacy we want to leave, not only for our countries in the Asian region, but also for the whole planet.”
Nadya is the face of the 'One Degree Up' campaign in Singapore, as part of Earth Hour's global 'I Will If You Will' initiative, and has pledged to plant 100 baby trees in the Heart of Borneo If 20 shopping centres in Singapore pledge to support the campaign by turning their air conditioners up by one degree. Her commitment is the start of a broad campaign by WWF Earth Hour in Singapore in aimed at significantly reducing emissions in Singapore (Aircons account for 60% of energy bills in the country).
Taiwan are launching their campaign Thursday with the help hugely popular girl group S.H.E. Earth Hour is organised locally by the Society of Wilderness and focuses on an ongoing climate change education program in schools, reaching tens of thousands across the land. It's a key lobbying program around sustainable infrastructure development. To find out more about EH Ambassador activity around the region go to http://earthhour.org/ehasiancelebs
From Asia across to West coast of Africa in Nigeria
Run by an amazing group of volunteers from Students to IT and Business they will be holding three signature events in the cities of Abuja, Lagos and Portharcourt.
But for the Nigerian team their efforts are much more than just turning the lights out. They are using Earth Hour's IWIYW campaign to raise support for a petition to President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathon, to sign into law the Nigeria Climate Change Bill. The bill has forwarded to the President for his assent in December 2010, but has remained unsigned until this point. Learn more about the bill at: http://earthhourng.org/climatebill.html#sthash.GDHLtyQX.dpuf
See how far this inspiring team are prepared to go they have set themselves their own IWIYW challenge to get support for their campaign.
Support for the Bill comes from the Chairman Senate Committe on Environment, Senator Grace Bent, "The issue of Climate Change is a potential threat to the economy of this country and thank God the president is also from Niger Delta where the impact of environmental degradation is highly felt, so we implore him to sign this bill into law" and Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Climate Change, Mr Eziuche Ubani "Climate Change represents a clear and present danger to Nigeria's national interests. By signing the bill, the president will continue to demonstrate visionary leadership in addressing the climate crisis". Find out more at earthhourng.org.
And finally for today's update we want to share that the Vida Silvestre team in Argentina has enlisted the support of Club Atletico Independiente for their Hora Del Planeta 2013 campaign to build support for the creation of the 3.4 million hectare Marine Protected Area 'Banco Burwood'.
